What is HSN?

HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature, it was developed by the World Customs Organisation (WCO), it was introduced for the systematic classification of goods all over the world. HSN is a 6 digit uniform code. It classifies goods. India is a member of World Customs Orgaisation (WCO) and uses 8 digit HSN code. While rgistering GST, HSN has to be selected. A tax payer whose turnover is up to Rs. 1.5 crore is not requried to mention HSN code on invoices, a two digit HSN code is required to be mentioned on all invoices of a tax payer whose turnover is from Rs. 1.5 crore to Rs. 5 crore and a four digit HSN code is required to be menioned on all invoices of a tax payer whose turnover is above Rs. 5 crores.
